About us

Since its inception in 1952 by the Utretch Brothers of the Netherlands as a Trade School, Mawego Technical Training Institute has recorded tremendous growth in the development of Middle Level Training as an Institution.  It has continually fulfilled its mandate in training young people to acquire skills and technical knowledge that are in line with the industrial growth of our country and the vision 2030.

In 1967, the institution was taken over by the Government and became a National Technical Secondary School. In 1986, it was upgraded to a Technical Training Institute in the greater South Nyanza comprising Migori, Homa Bay and Kisii Counties, offering technical and business related courses at the levels of Certificate and Diploma. The Institute has a unique symbolic relationship with the surrounding community, which has been very supportive.

The institute falls under the ministry of Education with a Board of Governors responsible for oversight of day – to – day running of the institute. The institution is managed by top and middle – level management teams incorporated from all levels of leadership.

This Institute’s geographical location places it as one of the technology hubs around the country’s largest fresh water lake region and we are proud to have played major role as supplier of professionals involved in the running of many public and private sector enterprises in the lake region and the country. Our Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Science Laboratory Technology graduands among other disciplines easily fit in the job market. We have also partnered with various players including National Youth Service, Equity Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank and others to offer young Kenyans training and skills relevant to industry.

Today Technical and Vocational Education, Training and Research are in a period of extraordinary transition. Mawego Technical Training Institute is equally keeping abreast of the exciting transformation. Over the next few years we will grow our student population and expand the sizes of our facilities. This expansion will allow us to better our services to our clients.
The institute’s student population has grown over the years and now stands at 1,226 (Female : 404, Male : 822)  with the current teaching staff of 88 lecturers and 56 support staff.- Principal MTTI -
